A domicile ce week-end à Kegums, Pauls Jonass espérait sans doute pouvoir poursuivre sur la lancée du GP de Russie et offrir la victoire ce dimanche au public letton. Le champion du monde MX2 en titre et leader du classement provisoire a cependant dû se contenter de la 3ème marche du podium.
Très à l’aise dans le sable de Kegums, c’est Thomas Kjer Olsen qui, comme l’an passé, s’est offert la victoire. Avec une victoire en première manche puis une deuxième place derrière Jorge Prado, le Danois du team de Jacky Martens inscrit ainsi une deuxième victoire en GP à son palmarès.
Mais le fait marquant du week-end pour les supporters belges comme pour de nombreux observateurs, c’est assurément le podium de Jago Geerts. Dans sa première saison MX2 cette année, le pilote Kemea Yamaha monte pour la première fois sur le podium d’un GP. Parti en 8ème position dans la première manche, il remontera jusqu’en 4ème position. Dans la deuxième manche, le leader du championnat de Hollande MX2 partait dans la roue de Jorge Prado et ne subira que le retour de Thomas Kjer Olsen, parti 4ème et à qui il cèdera sa seconde place à la mi-course.
Hunter Lawrence contraint au forfait
De retour de blessure à Kegums ce week-end, Hunter Lawrence avait rassuré hier dans la manche qualificative en prenant la deuxième place derrière Prado. Hélas, l’Australien chutait en première manche sur la tête et préférait ne prendre aucun risque en ne prenant pas le départ de la seconde manche.
Au championnat, Jonass profite de la première manche en demi-teinte de Prado (10+1) pour reprendre 2 points à l’Espagnol et porter son avantage à 22 points. Jago Geerts occupe quant à lui désormais le 7ème fauteuil.
Le 8ème round du championnat du monde MX2 se disputera dès le week-end prochain en Allemagne, sur le circuit de Teutschenthal.
