Jo\u00ebl Smets, c’est bien plus que le quintuple champion du monde de motocross. Le \u00ab\u00a0lion flamand\u00a0\u00bb est avant tout une personnalit\u00e9 attachante, un caract\u00e8re \u00ab\u00a0entier\u00a0\u00bb et une d\u00e9termination hors du commun qui lui a valu de compter les supporters par milliers, au nord comme au sud du pays. Il reste encore aujourd’hui, dans son r\u00f4le de manager sportif chez KTM, l’un des pilliers du paddock MXGP. Il f\u00eate ce lundi son 51\u00e8me anniversaire.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Champion du monde \u00e0 5 reprises (1995, 1997, 1998, 2000 et 2003), Jo\u00ebl Smets a aussi remport\u00e9 3 fois le Motocross des Nations avec le team belge\u00a0(1995, 1997 et 2003) avant d’en devenir le coach. En 2006, il prend en effet le relais de Jo\u00ebl Robert \u00e0 la t\u00eate de l’\u00e9quipe belge pour le MX des Nations. Une fonction qu’il assumera avec coeur durant 11 ann\u00e9es avant de c\u00e9der \u00e0 son tour le flambeau \u00e0 Johan Boonen \u00e0 la fin de l’ann\u00e9e 2017.<\/p>\n

Smets a \u00e9galement coiff\u00e9 6 fois la couronne de champion de Belgique et a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9compens\u00e9 du titre de Sportif belge de l’ann\u00e9e en 2000.<\/p>\n

Le Limbourgeois a d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re en GP en 1989. Il avait alors d\u00e9j\u00e0 20 ans. Il remporte son premier GP 4 ans plus tard, sur la piste de Teutschenthal. Des d\u00e9buts tardifs qui n’ont pas emp\u00each\u00e9 Smets de signer pas moins de 56 autres victoires en GP au cours d’un carri\u00e8re sportive \u00e0 laquelle il met un terme en 2005.
