Le dernier exercice avant le repos demandait une application maximale. La boucle trac\u00e9e au sud d\u2019Al Duwadimi, pr\u00e9vue pour la veille dans le programme initial, a \u00e9t\u00e9 raccourcie \u00e0 345 kilom\u00e8tres pour permettre \u00e0 tous les pilotes de s\u2019attaquer \u00e0 une longue liaison menant au bivouac de Riyadh. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Auparavant, ils ont d\u00fb se d\u00e9battre dans une partie de navigation complexe, \u00e0 la fois dans les pistes empierr\u00e9es du d\u00e9but de la sp\u00e9ciale et dans l\u2019encha\u00eenement des vall\u00e9es et des massifs de dunes de la derni\u00e8re portion. Les motards qui avaient la charge d\u2019ouvrir ont pay\u00e9 cette difficult\u00e9, m\u00eame avec les bonifications attribu\u00e9es aux trois plus expos\u00e9s, mais Ross Branch a quant \u00e0 lui saisi l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de s\u2019imposer. Il n\u2019est pas donn\u00e9 \u00e0 tout le monde de pouvoir retourner la hi\u00e9rarchie du Dakar \u00e0 son avantage. Beaucoup essayent, tr\u00e8s peu y parviennent. Sur la huiti\u00e8me \u00e9tape, c\u2019est un peu la mission que s\u2019\u00e9tait fix\u00e9e Mason Klein, le virtuose am\u00e9ricain qui commence \u00e0 affoler tous ses rivaux. En bouclant la sp\u00e9ciale, le \u00ab kid \u00bb pensait mettre la main sur le scratch du jour, mais s\u2019est fait coiffer par le Botswanais Ross Branch qui apporte une deuxi\u00e8me victoire de sp\u00e9ciale au constructeur indien Hero, apr\u00e8s celle de Joaquim Rodrigues l\u2019an dernier.<\/p>\n

Conscient de la performance qu\u2019il venait tout de m\u00eame de r\u00e9aliser et de sa bonne op\u00e9ration au g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, Klein se r\u00e9jouissait avant tout d\u2019avoir pris les commandes de la course, ce qu\u2019indiquaient les premi\u00e8res feuilles de classement. Mais une p\u00e9nalit\u00e9 pour exc\u00e8s de vitesse le prive de cet honneur, son compatriote et mentor Skyler Howes restant le patron de la cat\u00e9gorie motos \u00e0 mi-course.<\/p>\n

De son c\u00f4t\u00e9, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Martiny a roul\u00e9 aujourd’hui en tandem avec le Fran\u00e7ais Benjamin Belot. \u00ab\u00a0Nous avons des niveaux tr\u00e8s comparables\u00a0\u00bb, explique Martiny. \u00ab\u00a0Je menais la danse dans les parties rapides, Benjamin montrait la voix dans les dunes\u00a0\u00bb. Une belle compl\u00e9mentarit\u00e9 qui les m\u00e8ne aux 31\u00e8me et 32\u00e8me places sur cette 8\u00e8me \u00e9tape. Au g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, notre compatriote aborde la seconde semaine de course au 36\u00e8me rang du scratch. Il occupe la 16\u00e8me place de la cat\u00e9gorie Rally2.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s une journ\u00e9e de repos ce lundi, les concurrents se lanceront donc dans une s\u00e9rie de 6 \u00e9tapes qui les m\u00e8nera jusqu’\u00e0 la ligne d’arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Dammam le dimanche 15 janvier prochain.<\/p>\n
